Maitland population breaks 80,000

Maitland’s population growth is showing no signs of slowing down, with more than 80,000 people now calling city home.

Preliminary data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday estimated that 81,235 people lived in Maitland as of June 30 last year, almost 2000 more people than the year before.

As well as census data, birth and death registrations, estimates of internal and overseas migration, and Medicare change of address information was used to compile the numbers.

As a result, 2016 population data was revised to show an estimated population of 79,340 people, despite the census recording a population of 77,305.

Based off 2011 and 2016 census data, Maitland was last year named as the state’s fastest growing region outside of Sydney, experiencing a growth rate of 15.5 per cent.

The latest statistic release still supports this notion, with the city growing by 2.4 per cent, or 1895 people, in the space of one year.

Furthermore, Tuesday’s data isolates the city’s growth centres, dividing Maitland into areas known as SA2s, which are statistical areas with populations generally between 3000 and 25,000 people.

Outside of Sydney and in terms of numbers of people, Maitland’s west experienced the second-highest SA2 growth in NSW from 2016 to 2017, with residential developments in Aberglasslyn and Lochinvar largely accounting for the 620 additional people who came to live on that side of the city.

The fastest rate of growth outside Sydney, however, went to the area from Thornton to Millers Forest. Due mainly to large-scale residential developments in Chisholm and Thornton North, the population soared by 5.3 per cent in the space of one year.

There are now 16,000 more people living in Maitland than there were a decade ago.
